A science teacher from WMG Academy Solihull is swapping test tubes for trunks as he attempts to take on a whale-sized challenge this month.
Mr Hilton, who joined the academy last month, is planning to swim 21 miles across the English Channel to raise money for NHS charities and the RNLI.
Mr Hilton said: “I like open water swimming and I wanted to do this because I thought it would be an adventure out in the fresh air.”
He is currently waiting for weather conditions and tides to be suitable for the swim and could be called to dash down to Dover at any time.
The endeavour has proved particularly difficult due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Mr Hilton said: “Because of lockdown it was hard to train because the swimming pools were closed so I’ve been swimming at Kingsbury and Dost Hill and I’ve also been going down to the Devon Coast to swim.”
Mr Hilton will swim from Dover to Cap Gris Nes with the Channel temperature at just 16 degrees.
