Hot Weather Update – Wednesday 25 June to Friday 27 June
Following a detailed review of the current weather situation and the Met Office’s decision to upgrade its weather warning to red, we are putting temporary arrangements in place to keep learners safe and comfortable while maintaining our high standards. The red warning is currently scheduled from 9am Wednesday 24th June until 9pm Thursday 25th June with an amber warning in place for Friday 26th June.
WMG Academy Solihull is a well-maintained school building with effective ventilation and air conditioning in a number of classrooms. There is also access to drinking water throughout the day. We are continuing to monitor conditions closely and will move lessons to air-conditioned rooms wherever possible. Staff will encourage regular hydration and make use of shaded and cooler areas where appropriate.
As previously shared students can continue to follow the more relaxed business dress code, students do not have to wear a tie or business jacket, with one additional change, if they have a WMG PE top they are permitted to wear this with their school trousers or skirt.
Please review the specific arrangements for your child’s year group below:
Year 12 Students
- Year 12 students will be expected to study online when not in an exam
- Given their maturity and proven ability to study independently, work will be set for them to complete via Google Classroom
- Normal Year 12 mock exams will continue albeit with slightly adjusted PM start times, see important changes below
Year 10 Students
- School will start at the normal time on both days 8:30am
- To keep students comfortable, where possible Year 10 classes will take place in our air-conditioned rooms and bottled water as well as the water fountains will be provided for hydration
- Students will be permitted to leave school at lunchtime, 12:55pm Wednesday to Friday to ensure they avoid travelling during the forecast, hottest part of the day
- The canteen will operate as normal albeit a slightly reduced service, students are welcome to purchase their lunch before leaving the school site, full break service will operate as normal
Important Changes:
- All exams scheduled for a PM start will now start straight after break at 11:05am
- Year 12 students need to take account of the earlier start time
We understand that early dismissal or remote learning may cause childcare or scheduling difficulties for some families. Students are more than welcome to remain on-site in our air-conditioned spaces until the end of the normal school day if this is easier and better for your family, please contact reception if this applies to you.
Please note that these details are subject to change as we continue to review the weather conditions.
Thank you for your continued support, understanding, and flexibility as we work to
keep our school community safe during this extreme weather.
