Sixth Form at WMG Academy is designed to bridge the gap between education and the professional world.
Students join a mature, specialist STEM environment where academic study sits alongside technical learning, employer engagement and outstanding careers and destinations support. Our curriculum is designed around students’ aspirations, with guidance to help each young person choose a programme that supports their future career, university or apprenticeship plans.
Flexible Pathways
Most students follow a programme equivalent to at least three Level 3 qualifications, choosing an appropriate pathway from A Levels, technical and vocational qualifications or a T Level.

Students can also choose to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), allowing them to explore an area of personal interest through independent research, design or practical project work.
The breadth of the current Post-16 offer reflects the Academy’s commitment to combining traditional STEM study with specialist technical routes.
Teaching and Learning in Sixth Form
Sixth Form students are treated as the young professionals they are becoming.
Teaching develops advanced subject knowledge while expecting students to become increasingly independent, organised and confident. Depending on their programme, learning may include lectures and classroom teaching, laboratory and practical work, independent research, technical projects, coursework and employer-set challenges.
Our industry links are particularly important at Key Stage 5. Students benefit from opportunities for employer and university engagement, careers activities, projects, work experience and industry placements.
T Levels take this relationship even further, combining substantial technical study with extended industry placements and employer-designed learning.
All Year 12 students also participate in a pastoral and enrichment programme, incorporating employer and university engagement alongside careers and destinations guidance.
Assessment in Years 12 and 13
Assessment reflects the qualification being studied and can include:
- regular subject assessments
- practical and technical assessments
- coursework and non-examined assessment
- employer or project-based tasks
- larger synoptic assessments
- formal mock examinations
- external examinations
Progress is normally reported as a working-at grade, with targets based primarily on students’ GCSE outcomes.
Teachers use assessment continuously to identify strengths, address gaps and prepare students for the specific requirements of their qualifications. As students approach Year 13 examinations and assessments, there is an increasing focus on mastery, examination technique, independent study and preparation for progression.
Google Classroom supports communication, resources, assignments and feedback, while students are expected to manage their time, meet deadlines and take responsibility for completing independent work.
Learning With a Destination in Mind
Every element of the Sixth Form experience is designed with progression in mind. Students are supported to explore university, higher and degree apprenticeships and employment, with the curriculum, employer experiences and careers programme working together to help them make informed and ambitious decisions.
WMG Academy’s employer-backed approach is designed to ensure students leave with more than a set of qualifications: they leave with knowledge, technical expertise, professional experience and a clear understanding of where their skills can take them.
