Personal Devices and the Use of Technology
Technology is an important part of teaching and learning at WMG Academy Solihull. As a specialist STEM academy, we want students to use digital technology confidently, safely and responsibly, while ensuring that personal devices do not distract from learning.
Technology for Learning
Every student joining WMG Academy is provided with a personal Chromebook to support their studies. Students use technology throughout the curriculum for research, coursework, project work, independent learning, homework and revision, with resources and assignments accessed through platforms including Google Classroom.
The Academy also provides access to modern computers and specialist software, including:
- Google Workspace – Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive
- Microsoft 365 – including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- 2D Design – engineering CAD
- SolidWorks – professional 3D engineering CAD
Students receive an Academy email account and secure individual login details. Access to Academy systems is subject to our Acceptable Use Policy.
Smartphones and Personal Mobile Phones
From September 2026, smartphones are not permitted at WMG Academy Solihull and students should not bring them onto the Academy site.
We recognise that some families want their child to have a way of making contact when travelling to and from the Academy. Students may therefore carry a basic ‘brick’ mobile phone with no internet or smartphone capability.
During the Academy day these devices must be Not seen. Not heard. They must be switched off and stored securely in the student’s locker for the duration of the school day.
This approach allows students to remain contactable when travelling while protecting the Academy day from the distraction of smartphones, social media and personal notifications.
Personal Laptops
Students may bring their own laptop to support their learning where appropriate (individual Chromebooks provided). Personal devices must be used responsibly and in accordance with Academy expectations and staff instructions.
The Academy cannot accept responsibility for the loss of or damage to personal devices brought onto site.
There will also be occasions when personal devices cannot be used, including formal examinations and assessments. Students must always follow staff instructions regarding technology.
Safe and Secure Access
Our IT network and internet connection are centrally managed and protected. Filtering and monitoring systems operate across Academy-owned devices and devices connected to the Academy Wi-Fi, helping us maintain a safe digital learning environment.
Unusual or concerning online activity can be brought to the attention of the Academy’s safeguarding team so that appropriate action can be taken.
Keeping Your Work Safe
Students are expected to save their work securely using Google Drive and other Academy-approved cloud services, allowing them to access their work both on and off site.
USB storage devices are not permitted. Cloud-based storage is safer, more reliable and significantly reduces the risk of work being lost through damaged or misplaced memory devices.
Academy systems and cloud services are backed up and managed securely to protect students’ work.
