Behaviour Management
Positive Rewards
At the academy, we work towards promoting positive behaviours and, as such, we recognise those students who continuously achieve this status through Reward Certificates, reward trips and prizes. Rewards assemblies are carried out half-termly. Students Receive P A R reward points. These follow the academies Professional, Aspirational and Respectful Standards.
Behaviour Sanctions in Lessons
At WMG we categorise behaviours into three professional standards. These are Professional, Aspirational and Respectful. This ensures that students understand why their behaviour is important and how it may affect them in future employment.
Disruptive Behaviour
- PAR-1 (Professional/Aspirational/Respectful): Positive redirection – Conversation with student
- PAR-2 : Reflect and Reset – A second conversation with student giving them an opportunity to change their behaviour
- PAR-3 : Repair and Re-engage – Removal from the lesson to the Pastoral Room to reflect on their behaviour and actions. Reflection sheet to be completed and same day detention issued. An automated message will go out to parents/carers.
- PAR-4 (Professional/Respectful): Serious or sustained breach of conduct – This will result in the following, a discussion by the Senior team on the required sanction and intervention. Which could lead to an internal isolation, Fixed term suspension, initiate a behaviour report or behaviour contract.
Detentions:
These will take place on the same day. They will be 20 minutes on Monday, Thursday and Friday and 10 minutes on Tuesday and Wednesday. Multiple detentions on the same day will be added together. If the student fails to attend any detention this is escalated to a Friday Senior Teacher Detention = 40 minutes. Automated messages will be sent to all parents/carers to inform of the detention. If they fail to attend this detention, it will result in a PAR-4 and could lead to an internal or fixed Term suspension. They will repeat the detention the following Friday.
Tiered Behaviour System
In order to best support our students the Academy operates a tiered approach to behaviour management. If a student is regularly receiving PAR negatives or PAR-3 removal from a lesson they will be escalated to the academies support behaviour report system. Below you can see this tiered approach.
Tier 1 – Tutor intervention and support (Parent informed)
Tier 2 – Behaviour Manager / Behaviour Mentor (Parent meeting)
Tier 3 – Head of Year / Head of Department (Parent meeting)
Tier 4 – Senior Teacher – Behaviour contract. (Parent meeting)
Tier 5 – Risk of Permanent Exclusion. (meet with CEO/Governor/Senior Team)
The behaviour mentor can work with the student at all tiers to offer specific support, and may arrange separate meetings to discuss this support.
Punctuality to and in the Academy
Students who are late to the academy are issued with a detention on that day. However, students who are persistently late will receive an escalated Friday Senior Team Detention = 40 minutes. They will also be placed on a punctuality report.
Students Late to Lessons: Students have 3 minutes to arrive for their lesson. If they arrive after the announcement they receive a standard Academy Detention. Students that are late 3 or more times in the week, will be escalated to the Friday Senior Team Detention = 40 minutes.
Mobile Phones
WMG Academy is a Smartphone-Free Academy to ensure a safe, focused, and professional learning environment.
Definition of Devices: The Academy makes a clear distinction between a “simple” or “brick” phone (no internet access) and a smartphone or “smart device” (any device with internet or potential internet access, including Kindles, tablets, and smartwatches).
Prohibition: Students are prohibited from bringing any smartphone or smart device into the Academy.
Sanctions for Non-Compliance
There are strict consequences for non compliance to ensure the Academy remains a distraction-free environment.
Standard Confiscation: If a smartphone is seen or used on the Academy site (excluding the Sixth Form designated area), it will be confiscated by staff and kept securely until the Friday of that week.
Friday Violation: If a device is confiscated on a Friday, it will be held until the following Friday.
Parental Collection: Alternatively, a parent or carer may visit the Academy in person to collect the confiscated device before the Friday return date.
Exceptional Circumstances (Medical)
The Academy recognises that some students have exceptional circumstances—such as medical conditions (e.g., blood glucose monitoring) —that necessitate access to a digital device.
- Parents must contact the Assistant Principal for Pastoral and Attendance directly to discuss and formally record these arrangements.
- Adjustments will be made on an individual basis to ensure safety and wellbeing are maintained without compromising the Smartphone-Free environment for the wider school community.
